This summer KWMR had the distinct privilege of once again having a youth intern. Livia Rodoni joined us for three days each week this summer to get some work experience. I asked her to write up a summary of her time at KWMR, which you can read below. 

KWMR is seeking a Youth Board Representative for this school year. You attend board meetings on the third Wednesday of the month from 6 PM to 7:30 PM (most are on Zoom) and share your ideas with the Board of Directors and staff. It’s a great way to learn how nonprofit boards operate and it’s great to have a youth perspective. This summer I got an inside look into everything that goes into running KWMR. As an intern I met a lot of people, learned and discovered many interesting things about radio.

My favorite part was meeting new people. Jeff’s extensive knowledge of music definitely stood out to me. I also enjoyed seeing how Amanda’s incredible organizational skills kept the whole station running smoothly. All of the people I met brought something new and different to the experience. I am very grateful that I had such an amazing opportunity to learn from them.

One of the key things I learned was just how much work goes into producing even just a few minutes of media. It can take hours just to produce minutes of content.   Another thing I found very interesting was all the different types of shows. There is such a large variety that there is definitely something for everyone. One of my jobs this summer was sorting through and labeling some of the vinyl. There is every genre imaginable and so many different artists. Also interesting was how differently people speak on the radio versus how they sound in real life.  If I did not meet them in person I would not recognize a person from their “radio” voice.

I am very thankful for everyone who gave me this opportunity and gave me such a wonderful experience. I also really appreciate everyone who took the time out of their day to answer all my questions and teach me so much: Mia, Jordan, Richard, Ian, James, Jeff, and Amanda. From this internship I gained a new appreciation for music, radio, and all the work that goes into creating great quality media for listeners in the community daily. This was definitely the best way I could have spent the summer and I would do it again and again without a doubt.
