Round Up: ”Elks Club”

“Elks Club”
⚡ March 31, 2026 ⚡
Back when the elk fence out at Pierce Point came down, I was thinking about starting a poll on how long it would take for an elk to end up in the northern part of the Olema Valley. There were going to be fabulous prizes for the winner, too.
A rogue bull Tule elk has already been spotted several times on both the east and west sides of Shoreline Highway between Olema and Point Reyes Station. And while elk are generally more shy of humans and vehicles (unlike their Cervidae relations–deer), since this hefty dude is crossing the road, be careful out there!

Elk are most active at dawn and dusk and spend most of their time eating. This fella seems to be solo, no cows have been spotted. I saw him hanging out with some deer.
There is some speculation on whence said bull elk came. Maybe the herd over by Limantour? He could have made his way east by way of more easily navigated terrain after the Woodward Fire in 2020, or perhaps from the smaller herd out by Wildcat campground.
I have seen him twice, both times in a similar location while riding my bike up to work. I’m not sure I would have noticed him if I had been driving.
So much for my exciting poll. Wildlife is among us. A pack of coyotes has taken up residency in Olema and have been spotted all around the town. Their howling sounds like it is right in the yard, and it might just be!
Don’t miss these KWMR events…
Maybe you have “herd” that KWMR has some fun events coming up that you might want to flock to. Join the pack at Griffo Distillery this Sunday to catch Space Suit in broad daylight. These guys (Flyn and Seamus) are great! And if you are not nocturnal, this could be the show for you!
