Round Up: ”It’s OK to cut back…”

“It’s OK to cut back…”
⚡ January 27, 2026 ⚡
It is the time of year that those of us who do not “summer prune” are getting out the loppers and pruning shears and filling our green bins with suckers and crossed branches.
My sister, an expert gardener, recommended summer pruning and I was ready to do it, but it was new to me, so I procrastinated, and here we are at the end of January. Sometimes change is hard.
I think pruning might be one of the most dangerous things that I participate in any given year if you don’t count freeway driving (which I don’t do a lot of). Pruning involves climbing ladders, sharp implements, and balance.
I did not prune alone. Ken was there with me and brought out the chainsaw for some select cuts. Even Waylon got into the game and was excited by all the new sticks everywhere (until he went back to digging).

Johnny Dollar, a new contributor to KWMR has a very in-depth safety briefing regarding pruning. To say he is a safety nut is an understatement. Safety cannot be underestimated. (Johnny Dollar audio file insert). For the record, our gloves fit well, and our eyes were protected, but no hard hats.
Pruning can be more metaphorical as well. We wait until the energy from the leaves has gone back down into the roots to be stored for fruit production. We shape the branches for the best light and health of the tree. Sometimes you have to eliminate something to thrive.
Times are crazy and what is happening in our country is understandably bringing many folks down. Even if you avoid the news, it’s all around us. Remember this when you are out interacting in the world with one another. Be kind.

Join our Board!
KWMR is looking for people who love community radio to join our Board! If that sounds “boring” to you, think again–our board members step up to help out and talk to listeners at our local events, like KWMR Day on May 2nd.
If you have an interest in being considered for a governance role with KWMR, please fill out this FORM. We will be in touch!
The KWMR Board meets 10 times per year, monthly except in August and December on the 3rd Wednesday at 6PM. Some meetings are on Zoom, and some are in person.
We ask that you be an active supporter of KWMR and join us at events and fundraisers for the radio station.
