Round Up: ”Standing Together”

“Standing Together”

⚡ January 20, 2026 ⚡

West Marin Community Services organized, with the leadership of Alma Sanchez, a wonderful event yesterday. In fact there were four events held in West Marin on MLK Day including Point Reyes Station, Bolinas, the San Geronimo Valley, and Tomales.

Speakers included Jason Deschler, a Tamalko (Coast Miwok of Marin) of the Hukuiko band from the villages of Etcha-Kolum (Tomales Bay) and Etcha Tamal (Nicasio) with ancestral ties to Bodega Bay and Petaluma. John Eleby spoke about how relevant Dr. King’s speech is related to what is happening now. We heard from Maria Orozco and Glenda Mejia about their experiences as immigrants. Michelle Walker spoke about moving to this area as an LGBTQ person and how grateful she was for the community. Theresa Harlan spoke about her connection to Felix Cove and the desire to have a presence on her family’s ancestral land.  Anne Marie Flynn, Executive Director of West Marin Community Services, spoke from the heart about a call to action for the community. The entire event had live Spanish interpretation.

A crowd of well over 100 people enjoyed a pot luck breakfast supplied by residents and businesses. After the presentations by the various speakers, the group walked to the wetlands, followed by more music and native dancers. An evening pot luck ended the day of celebrating both our differences and our interconnectedness.

During breakfast it was fun to catch up with folks I had not seen in a while. The California Highway Patrol were accompanying an “extra wide load” of the two halves of a  double wide home through Point Reyes Station. There was speculation at first that this was some of the new housing coming into town, but it was not. In fact it was housing being removed from one of the ranches in the Point Reyes National Seashore and hauled to a ranch east of Petaluma.

Today on “Epicenter” at 5 PM you can hear audio from both the Point Reyes Station event and the Bolinas event. Congratulations to West Marin Community Services for handling the coordination for all of the events in West Marin.

Heads up! The Green Bridge replacement will commence later this spring of 2026. I heard a rumor that in addition to the three week hard closure that there would be “one way traffic control for two years.” This is not true. I confirmed with District 4 Caltrans that there would be one way traffic control starting this spring and leading up to and right after the hard closure, but that it would not last for 24 months. Even though the project won’t be “complete until 2028, there are a lot of things, including the planting of vegetation to help restore the area that are part of the project. It’s gonna be a royal pain, but we can handle it!

Western Weekend 2024

Join our Board!

We were very successful last year with our call for prospective board members. We have had several folks leave the board for different reasons, including being termed out! If you have an interest in being considered for a governance role with KWMR, please fill out this FORM. We will be in touch!

The KWMR Board meets 10 times per year, monthly except in August and December on the 3rd Wednesday at 6PM. Some meetings are on Zoom, and some are in person.

We ask that you be an active supporter of KWMR and be willing to roll up your sleeves and help with events and fundraisers for the radio station.
