“Sweethearts”
January 21st, 2025

‘Sweethearts of the Radio’ has been going on much longer than my involvement at KWMR. It was one of KWMR’s first recurring events. I also know that other than missing the past four years due to COVID there have been other gaps over the years for various reasons. So maybe this is the 20th out of 26 years? I am just not sure, but it has a long history!

It’s special this year to bring Laurie Lewis back to the stage, since Laurie has performed in more of these concerts than anyone (as far as I know). She’ll be joined by guitar master Nina Gerber. Sam Misner and Megan Smith (Misner and Smith) will also be returning to the Dance Palace Stage as well. And interestingly, Nina Gerber was featured on Misner & Smith’s recent release All Is Song – so I expect a little overlap among the acts.

When I was a volunteer programmer at KWMR, prior to being hired as the Station Manager, I emceed the event several times along with my cohort Charlie Morgan. KWMR began to mix it up with different emcees over the years and this year Mia Johnson-Martinez and Jorge Martinez will be doing the emceeing honors. Mia also secured the sponsors and designed the poster and the program. Later this spring Mia and Jorge are expecting their first child! So actually there will be three emcees for the very first time!

Tickets are selling but there are still seats available if you are interested in joining us on Saturday, February 22nd for an evening of excellent music. The KWMBaR will be in full swing offering some tasty beverages along with some sweet treats from the Bovine Bakery.

So make your early dinner reservations (at one of our sponsors) and join us to mingle with fellow community members. Doors are at 6:30 PM and the show starts at 7 PM. We’ll get you out the door by 10 PM, and it’s not a school night.

This is a fundraiser for KWMR. Special thanks to our sponsors, Point Reyes Books, the Station House Cafe, and Sidestreet Kitchen. Special thanks to the Dance Palace for always being so great to work with and having a great hall for music and gathering.

I look forward to welcoming you to this special KWMR tradition. See you there!

p.s. KWMR staff attended the Standing Together events yesterday. The Point Reyes Station event was recorded and some of the speeches will be featured on The Lowdown tomorrow morning at 9 AM. Jeff is producing an Epicenter for today at 5 PM (and archived soon after) featuring audio from both Point Reyes and Bolinas. The Point Reyes audio will be cleaned up and posted on KWMR’s Youtube page later this week in case you missed the event. Congratulations to the organizers for these fine events.
